Curriculum & Schedule

Instruction in our program is based on a core curriculum and multi-disciplinary approach that encompasses every aspect of clinical gastroenterology and hepatology. Fellows will have hands-on training at the main campus hospital in Ann Arbor, as well as our satellite hospitals which include Chelsea Hospital and Trinity Health Livingston. New for the 2025-2026 academic year, our fellows will also rotate at Trinity Health Livonia. Outpatient experiences will include a weekly Gastroenterology continuity clinic occurring throughout all 3 years, as well as attendance at specialty clinics in Inflammatory Bowel Disease and Hepatology at Huron Gastro. Second-year fellows will spend 1 month at the University of Michigan on inpatient hepatology consult services including liver transplant consultations. Third-year fellows have the option to rotate through the outpatient hepatology clinics at the University of Michigan. There will be robust training in endoscopic procedures throughout all 3 years of training with dedicated endoscopy blocks and ample opportunities for endoscopy when rotating at the satellite hospitals. Senior fellows will have some exposure to advanced procedures including ERCP and endoscopic ultrasound. Our curriculum includes weekly didactic lectures, multi-disciplinary IBD conferences, clinical practice meetings, lectures with GI pathologists and radiologists, and M&M conference. Opportunities to arrange elective rotations are available to third-year fellows. In addition to clinical training, fellows will develop an understanding and appreciation of clinical outcomes and research during the fellowship. All fellows will have a mentor and complete a research project during their 3 years of fellowship. They will be encouraged to publish their research in a peer-reviewed journal and/or present their research at a national meeting.
Rotation Schedule
New for the 2023-24 academic year, we are transitioning away from a monthly block schedule to a 26 blocks, bi-weekly block schedule. This will allow the schedule to be distributed fairly and account for some longer vs. shorter months.

Call Schedule
Average 1 in 7days, at-home call
Effective the 2025-2026 academic year, our program has expanded to 3 fellows per year. During this time weekday and weekend call will average 1 day in 7. This average will change during the 2026-2027 academic year to 1 day in 8, and later to 1 day in 9 effective in the 2027-2028 academic year.
Conferences
Fellows are encouraged to attend one national conference in both 2nd and 3rd year of training. First-year fellows have time blocked to attend the first-year fellows interactive endoscopy program in Chicago hosted by ASGE. Our department has travel stipends to help offset travel costs.
Educational Meetings
A comprehensive review of Gastroenterology and Hepatology will be covered in a weekly lecture series throughout the fellowship. There will also be routine journal clubs, morbidity and mortality conferences, a weekly multidisciplinary GI tumor board meeting, as well as a multidisciplinary inflammatory bowel disease conference.
